This past weekend was the 2013 COCA-I Conference, hosted by Camp Courage in Greenville, South Carolina. Once a year, oncology camps from across North America and beyond gather together to share resources and presentations, and build relationships with other camps across the world. It’s also a chance for the camps to be recognized for their hard work and accomplishments in the annual COCA-I awards!
Every year, members at COCA-I submit their entries for a variety of awards, including the Spirit of COCA-I, and a variety of “Best in Show” awards (photo, video, website, etc.) Here are the awards that we took home this year:
“Best of Show” Camp Photo
Each group is allowed to enter one camp photo in the “Best of Show” competition, but only one is selected. This year, Camp Trillium took home the trophy with the one above, taken at Rainbow Lake this past Summer.
We welcome you to download this photo, print it out, or share it on social media.
Camp Spirit Award
The Camp Spirit Award is awarded annually to individuals who best exemplifies the spirit of COCA-I in providing a meaningful experience for children who have been diagnosed with cancer. The awards are awarded based on region. This year, we’re excited to announce the Camp Spirit Award winner for Region 9 (Canada) is long-standing Camp Trillium volunteer, Larry Kruse!
For 12 years, Larry has been an important part of Camp Trillium, and is well-known for his spectacular wit and sense of humour. Larry is loved by our youngest campers, aspiring teen leaders and parents alike, and has been an incredible role model for our staff and volunteers as well. He is heavily involved in camp programming, going above and beyond by helping with, and participating in various programs and activities. In fact, Camp Trillium has become such a large part of Larry’s life that he has a tattoo of our logo over his heart!
We’re so happy that Larry has been recognized on the international stage.
